Since 2006, Woezo Africa Music & Dance Theatre Inc. has been passionately dedicated to bringing the history of African culture to the masses through traditional and modern modes of performing arts, including dance, music, theatre and storytelling.
Woezo Africa continues to use the combined power of arts and education to hold events that promote compassion and understanding from and for the diverse communities with whom we connect. Woezo Africa Cultural Festival (WACF) is a Feature Celebration Site for the 2020 Alberta Culture Days that engages kids and adults alike in activities that showcase the unique histories, artistic traditions and cultural expressions from the African diaspora.
From September 12, 19 and 26 participants can expect to end their week on a high note with three Saturdays filled with traditional African drum and dance performances, stimulating arts and crafts, moving vocal artists and musicians, spirited comedians and spoken word artists, cooking classes, a screening of an award-winning documentary and a presentation of our 2020 digital UNGANISHA dance theatre production all live-streamed in the comfort of your home! With the theme of “Emerge from the Roots,” the festival intends to engage children and adults alike in activities that showcase unique histories, artistic traditions and cultural expressions to inspire minority groups to find power in their identity.
Through our collaborations with various African and Caribbean community organizations in Calgary, we are able to provide multiple avenues for learning and celebration. All youth and adult workshops and events will be open for free to the public and we will be accepting optional Pay-What-You-May contributions for admission via live streaming and live audience performances.
